Earth To Fed — It’s Your Move

The Federal Reserve which was created by an act of Congress in 1913 — I think I have the date right.   Before then, the United States went through a number of serious and long recessions and money panics for which Congress got a lot of blame, and rightly so, no doubt.  The idea of the Federal Reserve was to take the heat off Congress when there was economic trouble in the United States.

Troubles came not too many years later when the stock market crashed in 1929 and ushered in the Great Depression, which lasted until World War II began.  The Federal Reserve was raising interest rates when it should have been lowering them and talking about the need for a balanced budget when it should have been encouraging more government spending.

Now we are engaged in another period of frothy times that Paul Krugman and Mary Pitt say are very similar to those just before the crash in 1929.  The stock market is down 100 points as I write this, and the question is, What is the Fed going to do about it?

Bail or Jail For The Scooter?

Is the Scooter going to be out on bail while his sentence is being appealed?  If that is the case, it’s a done deal — he’ll never serve a day.  But Judge Reggie Walton doesn’t appear to see it that way.  If he denies bail during the appeal, what then?  Either Bush has to pardon him on the spot, or the Scooter goes to jail.  Bush has already said that he didn’t want to get involved during the appeal process.

So, what is Bush going to do if the judge denies the Scooter bail?  This is going to be kind of fun to watch.  If Libby were going to be out on bail during the appeal period, it’s a piece of cake.  Just before Bush leaves he issues a pardon to Libby.  No harm — no foul.  But if the judge slaps him in jail, it’s a long way to the end of next year.  The $250,000 fine is no big thing.  Somebody will come up with the money to pay the fine.  But that still leaves 18 months in the slammer.  Is Libby going to do that much time without saying anything?

BTW, Judge Walton was appointed by none other than George W. Bush.

The Energy Quandary

There’s a major push on in Congress to pass coal-to-liquids legislation on the grounds that it furthers the U.S.’s energy independence, despite the fact that it makes our climate crisis worse.  This is all pretty up-stream stuff, but the idea is to make the "liquid coal"  less toxic than would be the case if the coal were burned as a solid.  The coal is liquefied by crushing it, making it easier to remove the impurities such as ash.

The product is a long way off in the future.  I’d rather work on getting hydrogen out of water.  There’s an unlimited supply of that on each side of the country.  After you remove the hydrogen, you’re left with oxygen, which doesn’t sound too bad as a waste product.  In the meantime, it looks like we’re all going to starve to death because they’re going to use up all the corn making fuel for all the cars that people drive around.

Time for the Media to Rise and Shine

This is what I think is typical of the media and columnists today.  You can include Margaret Carlson in the group, too.  She’s the one who thought it was more fun to poke fun at Al Gore than it was to point out to people just what kind of person they were getting in George Bush in 2000.  Was there a problem in poking fun at Bush?

Then after 9-11, they all got in bed with Bush and Cheney.  Even today, Maureen Dowd thinks what she is writing about Al Gore is right on the mark.  What I think it comes down to a very simple thing — they are all incredibly intimidated.  The only one with balls — all male media members included — is an 80-year-old woman, Helen Thomas.  It’s time for the media to get out of bed and go to work.

About That Immigration Bill…

Big bidness and small bidness see lots of cheap labor in the immigration bill.  Democrats think they see lots of votes — but when?  I see lots of trouble. In fact, the immigration bill looks like it might get hung up.  I can think of lots of reasons for hanging it up, but I’m sure they are not the ones causing the delay.  Bush desperately wants it for his "legacy" but it’s pretty late in the game for him to be concerned about that.  Arizona Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) looked really worried on CNN’s Lou Dobbs show last week.  Wonder what has happened to put the immigration bill on the skids?

Countdown to Drop-Out

The Republicans have 11 candidates now if you count Thompson Twin, Fred.  In the wings is Grinch Gingrich who would make it an even Dirty Dozen.  If ever there was a year for Jim Inhofe (R-OK) to run, this is it.  That would make it an odd Baker’s Dozen.

Democrats have almost as many, but I expect some of them to drop out in the not too distant future.  It’s going to take an awful lot of money to last until November 2008.  Who will be the first — will it be a Republican or Democrat to drop out?  Post your entries on or before but no later than the last Tuesday of the fourth quarter of this year.  Duplicate prizes to be awarded in case of ties.

Backing Down Should Not Have Been an Option

It should be painfully obvious that all the claptrap by the media about the Democrats being unable to override the Bush veto is just plain hokum.  Not even the soft-brained politcal pundits are that stupid.  No bill means no funding.  What the Democrats in the House and Senate should have been doing is standing up in the House and the Senate and saying just that — veto this bill and you will get no funding for your war in Iraq.   Why didn’t they do just that?

I almost never agree with George Will on anything.  He has trouble reaching the right conclusions, but he almost always gets his facts right.  The facts are that the Democrats had the upper hand.  What they didn’t do is make sure this was known.  The message to Bush, shouted from the floors of the House and Senate, should have been — Take this bill or you get nothing for your war in Iraq.

But it’s puzzling.  Both wars have been going on for more than two years.  Bush has been back-dooring appropriations for both wars by asking for so-called supplemental appropriations for his wars after the budget process has been completed.  I wonder if this has even been legal.  The Bush answer has been that they didn’t know how much to ask for in advance, but that doesn’t or shouldn’t make any difference.

ALL THEY HAVE IS EACH OTHER…

"The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis."~~Dante

Okay. Let’s talk about troops. Everybody’s doing it. We’re bombarded round-the-clock with "support the troops…fund the troops…bring the troops home…surge the troops…use the troops for Commander Guy photo opps…" Congress is embroiled in a ghoulish "troop" food fight that has gone on far too long. Democrats say Republicans demoralize and dishonor the troops by sending them into an unwinnable war built on lies. Republicans counter that, by suggesting the war is lost, Democrats demoralize and dishonor the troops by calling them "losers."

Losers? Oh, yes. Big time. The men and women who wear this nation’s uniform are losers every day, in every way. They are not only demoralized and dishonored, but are dehumanized by a diabolical den of dimwits whose eyes never waver from the 2008 prize, and who view "troops" as a faceless mass of political capital to be spent toward winning that prize. Their deserter commander-in-chief and his chickenhawk minions are very careful to call military personnel "troops," lest they assume human form and enter the slumbering masses’ consciousness — a vacuous pit otherwise known as the "dead zone."

Killing the Troops

On Armed Forces Day, May 19, eight soldiers were blown to bits by roadside bombs in Iraq — a total of 15 for the weekend, which brought the casualty toll since the March 2003 invasion to 3,419. As the troops lay dead and dying, body parts scattered amidst the explosive ruin in a foreign land, their president took to the airwaves to somberly discuss…how to make life easier for illegal immigrants here at home. Less than a week later, as Bush and the press were bobbing and weaving in the Rose Garden, the number of dead troops rose to 3,432, a day later to 3,444 and, finally, on May 26 — two days before Memorial day — to 3,455.

That’s 36 American men and women, most under the age of 30, lost in one week. Lost forever. On Memorial Day, as Bush yet again disgraced the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery with more babbling about how his will cannot be broken and the only way to honor the dead troops is to complete his "mish-shun," eight American troops were slain in a Baghdad roadside explosion, another in an explosion near Tahir, two perished in a helicopter crash, and five British troops were kidnapped. It’s difficult to keep up, but the total now stands at 3,467. No, 3,471. No, 3,474. No, 3,480. No, 3,495.

God, I can’t keep up with the numbers. It’s impossible to do the math — to stay abreast of the burgeoning number of precious human beings who were lied into a death trap and who return to orphans, widows, and parents physically maimed, psychologically deranged or as neatly folded US Flags. There is no evidence that Bush knows, or cares, that 633 soldiers and marines have been brutally wiped off the face of the earth since he was given the Iraq Study Group report, then strutted off like a college kid on Christmas break to "decide" whether to pull the troops out of the trap or to keep using them as bait. We knew, and Congress knew, what his decision would be — and what it was — more troops.

Betraying the Troops

The surge has been quietly ongoing since then, in spite of angry shouts from the American people — shouts that fell on deaf ears not only in the Oval Office, but throughout the Congress. House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid caved to Bush’s demands, while vowing to come back in September and "hold the president to account." Reid announced with bowed head, "We will never, ever, ever, ever give in to this president." Then he gave in.

Sad. There is no honor in a nation whose leaders are given the power to choose life or death for their fellow citizens held captive in an illegal, treasonous, bloody occupation — and choose death. What do you do after betraying those who elected you — trusted you — to stem the needless flow of American blood? Do you dash off to Greenland to check on the climate, or do you stand in the well of the Senate, eyes downcast, with your tail between your legs?

It doesn’t matter. They knew what they were doing — extending tours of duty from 12 months to 15 months, sending other troops back for second and third tours — weary, wounded and disheartened. They had the purse strings, the Constitutional power, and the mandate of the American people to bring Bush’s madness to a screeching halt — to save the lives of those citizens he daily condemns to death.

They chose, instead, to back down. They chose to allow Bush — as Texas commentator Jim Hightower said — to stick the troops in another country’s vicious civil war. "They’re under attack from every direction by every faction, every hour of every day," Hightower wrote, "hit by car bombs, roadside bombs, chlorine bombs, IEDs, suicide bombs, rocket fire, mortar rounds, snipers, and assassins. There is no safety in Iraq."

The legislators who voted to fund Bush’s folly until September were casting votes of betrayal. Nothing will change in September. A second surge, sans the initial fanfare, is underway that could double the number of troops in Iraq by December, bringing the total to more than 200,000. We can disregard December if we are to believe CNN Pentagon correspondent Jamie McIntyre, who reported on Memorial Day that "no major troop reductions are planned until at least January 2009."

We can also disregard January 2009. Accordng to Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, there is no plan to even plan withdrawal of troops. "We do have ongoing replacements of forces, and we do change the size of the force over time so that that system is available to either plus-up or draw down," Pace told the Senate in early May, "but we have published no orders saying come up with a complete plan for total drawdown." However, Pace did say they planned to maintain a series of military installations for a long period of time — maybe a few decades…

You’d think as a minimum, the top military brass and the troops’ commander-in-chief would know at any given moment exactly how many lives were lost in their war. However, the only thing Bush knows is that he "grieves ‘n mourns" for the heroes who "give their lives" for his mission. Numbers aren’t important. What’s important to Bush is that he "pre-shates" their sacrifice. And Pace, who monitors the number of gays wearing the hetro-military uniform, commented last week that we lost "nearly 3,000 Americans on 9-11," and then warned we are "getting close" to losing that many troops in Iraq.

Actually, Pete, we are losing three or more American men and women every single day. It’s six months — 180 days — 540 dead troops until December. It’s 18 months — 545 days –1,635 dead troops until January 2009. How many days — how many dead troops — are there in a "few decades"? You do the math.

Supporting the Troops

George Bush and the corporate war profiteers have blanketed the landscape of the entire country with yellow ribbon. "Support the Troops" is non-sequitural double think — a psyops tool cleverly used by both Republicans and Democrats to desensitize and control the slobbering masses. It means you are anti-American if you scream in pain each time a soldier or marine is killed — innocent Iraqis are massacred. It means shut the hell up and support whatever deranged blather comes out of Bush’s mouth, even if we must sacrifice our sons and daughters on his killing fields.

So many of them died in vain.

In Feb. 2005, the Marines sent a "priority 1 urgent" request for more than 1,000 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. In spite of the MRAP’s proven ability to withstand blasts from IEDs and to save lives, it was 21 months (Nov. 2006) before this urgent plea was acted upon. After a few MRAPs trickled into the area and their life-saving value was recognized, both the Army and Marines requested as many as 18,000 to replace the totally inadequate humvees. Although Defense Secretary Robert Gates "talked the talk" that the MRAP is the Pentagon’s "highest priority" new gear buy, until the Pentagon "walks the walk," Americans will continue to be slaughtered by the ever-present IEDs.

Supporting the troops is ensuring they have sufficient equipment and materiel in order to survive, and providing the proper care for the wounded and maimed when they return. This type of support is not a high priority with the Bush administration. In addition to forcing soldiers to dig through scrap piles for metal to reinforce vehicles, injured troops are billed for damaged or lost body armor, charged for food while in the hospital and routinely have their pension benefits cut. Because of Bush’s brand of support, troops are faced not only with having to deal with the traumatic reality of their injuries, but most of them face financial ruin as well.

Bush has relentlessly fought supporting the troops from the outset. He not only opposes, but "strongly opposes" any pay raise for his troops. He threatened to veto the 2008 defense authorization bill if it included a paltry 3.5-percent raise for the military, a $40 monthly increase for widows and survivors, or any attempt to curb prices for prescription drugs the troops are forced to buy under TRICARE. Current pay and benefits are "sufficient," he said, echoing the refrain of Barbara Bush, his mother, as she looked out over the Katrina refugees penned up in the Houston Astrodome — "…so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this — this (she chuckled slightly) is working very well for them."

And, on Mar. 18, 2003, the day before Bush’s bloody invasion of Iraq, the former first lady appeared on ABC’s "Good Morning America" to shrug aside the death sentences he was imposing upon an entire generation of Americans. “Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it’s not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?”

Bush is truly his mother’s son — shallow, unfeeling, incapable of compassion. In a recent meeting with five families of slain soldiers, one, Elaine Johnson, asked him why we were in Iraq. Bush could not answer that, nor could he explain what we were fighting for. But he did toss each of them a presidential coin and quipped, "Don’t go sell it on eBay.”

To Bush, body bags and deaths are simply an inconvenience and, with the help of the corporate media, he is very adept at hiding them from prying eyes. Bush is on a righteous mission — he is the President, the Decider, the Commander-in-chief and God has chosen him to lead this country to its destiny.

And the troops? They have learned when it comes to support, all they have is each other. All they have is each other.

1st and 2nd Place honors go to none other than the home states of Bush and Cheney

By Richard E Walrath

After six years of denying that Global Warming is a problem, Bush now wants to be the leader in providing the solution–business technology.  As you might expect, he’s getting a cold shoulder.

They already have appointed a Senior Adviser.  I wonder what happened to the Junior Adviser?

Which state is guilty of the most pollution as measured by emissions of carbon dioxide?  Why Texas, of course!  Could that be the reason Bush did a 180-degree turn on Global Warming?

I wonder how many people know that the state of Texas is the biggest polluter in the country and that Wyoming pollutes more on a per capita basis than any other state?

Probably due to all that methane gas from the sheep, goats, cows, horses, and horses’ a**es.

Department of Justice – Four Individuals Charged in Plot to Bomb John F. Kennedy International Airport

Plot Targets Airport’s Jet Fuel Supply Tanks and Pipeline
Defendants Include Extremists in United States, Guyana, and Trinidad

BROOKLYN, NY – Four individuals, including a former member of the parliament of Guyana and a former airport cargo worker at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), have been charged with conspiring to attack JFK airport by planting explosives to blow up the airport’s major jet-fuel supply tanks and pipeline. The plot was foiled well before it came to fruition through an outstanding law enforcement effort in the United States and abroad.

The arrests were announced today by Roslynn R. Mauskopf, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Mark J. Mershon, Assistant Director-in-Charge, FBI, New York Field Office, Raymond W. Kelly, Commissioner, New York City Police Department, Samuel J. Plumeri, Superintendent of Police/Director of Public Safety, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, and Michael Balboni, Deputy Secretary for Public Safety, New York State Department of Homeland Security.

Agents from the FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force (JTTF) arrested one of the defendants, former JFK employee Russell Defreitas, a U.S. citizen and native of Guyana, in Brooklyn, New York. He is expected to make his initial appearance at 2:00 p.m. today before United States Magistrate Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto at the U.S. Courthouse, 225 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, New York. Abdul Kadir, a citizen of Guyana who has served as a member of the Guyanese Parliament, and Kareem Ibrahim, a citizen of Trinidad, are in custody in Trinidad. A fourth defendant, Abdel Nur, is a citizen of Guyana. The United States plans to seek their extradition.

According to the criminal complaint, beginning in January 2006 and continuing to the present, the defendants conspired to destroy buildings, fuel tanks, and fuel pipelines at JFK airport with explosives. JFK handles on average over 1,000 flights daily, approximately half of which are international flights, and handles annually, approximately 45 million passengers and over 1.5 million tons of cargo with an estimated value of $120 billion. The fuel supply for these operations are linked primarily to the Buckeye Pipeline, which distributes fuel and other petroleum products to various sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens, New York, among others.

As alleged in the complaint, the plot tapped into an international network of Muslim extremists from the United States, Guyana, and Trinidad, and utilized the knowledge, expertise, and contacts of the conspirators to develop and plan the plot, and obtain operational support and capability to carry it out. For example, as part of the plot, the conspirators dispatched Defreitas from Guyana to conduct video and photo surveillance of JFK airport on four occasions in January 2007. During the surveillance and using his knowledge of airport operations from his prior employment, Defreitas identified targets and escape routes and assessed airport security. The defendants also obtained satellite photographs of JFK airport and its facilities from the internet and traveled frequently between the United States, Guyana, and Trinidad to discuss their plans and solicit the financial and technical assistance of others.

The defendants used their connections to present their terrorist plot to radical groups in South America and the Caribbean, including senior leadership of Jamaat Al Muslimeen (“JAM”), which was responsible for a deadly coup attempt in Trinidad in 1990. As the complaint alleges, defendants Kadir and Nur were longtime associates of JAM leaders. Defendant Kareem also was preparing to send an emissary overseas to present the plan to other extremists.

An informant working with law enforcement agents began monitoring the plot at its early stages and made numerous recorded conversations with the defendants. In a recorded conversation following one of the surveillance missions to JFK airport, Defreitas predicted that the attacks would result in the destruction of “the whole of Kennedy,” that only a few people would survive the attack, and that because of the location of the targeted fuel pipelines, part of Queens would explode.

In discussing JFK airport as a target, Defreitas exulted over JFK airport’s symbolic importance:

Anytime you hit Kennedy, it is the most hurtful thing to the United States. To hit John F. Kennedy, wow …. They love John F. Kennedy like he’s the man …. If you hit that, this whole country will be in mourning. It’s like you can kill the man twice.

In a later recorded conversation with his coconspirators in May 2007, Defreitas compared the plot to attack JFK airport to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, stating, “even the Twin Towers can’t touch it,” adding that, “this can destroy the economy of America for some time.”

In discussing the plans, Kadir stressed the goal of causing economic damage and suggested minimizing the killing of innocent men and women. In one conversation, Kadir and Defreitas discussed the need to disable the airport control tower from which airport security monitors the fuel tank locations. Kadir, an engineer by training, explained that the tanks were, most likely, double tanks, requiring two explosions to provide enough oxygen to ignite the fuel inside the inner tank.

Kenneth L. Wainstein, Assistant Attorney General for National Security at the Justice Department, said, “The defendants sought to combine an insider’s knowledge of JFK Airport with the assistance of Islamic radicals in the Caribbean to produce an attack that they boasted would be so devastating to the airport that ‘even the Twin Towers can’t touch it.’ Like the Fort Dix case several weeks ago, this plot highlights the evolving nature of the terrorist threat we face, and our investigation into both plots highlights how our agents and prosecutors are refining their capability to detect and pre-empt such plots before they advance to a dangerous stage.”

“The defendants are charged with conspiring to bomb one of the busiest airports in the United States, located in one of the most densely populated areas in the northeast – had the plot been carried out, it could have resulted in unfathomable damage, deaths, and destruction,” stated U.S. Attorney Mauskopf. “But, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of law enforcement, the defendants’ plan never reached the operational stage, and the public was never at risk. We remain unwavering in our commitment to stop terrorist plots before they become terrorist acts and will spare no effort to secure the safety of the public.” Ms. Mauskopf added that the investigation is continuing.

Mark J. Mershon, Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office, stated, “The defendants had the connections to present their terrorist plot to radical groups in South America and the Caribbean, including senior leadership of Jamaat Al Muslimeen (“JAM”), which was responsible for a deadly coup attempt in Trinidad in 1990. As the complaint alleges, defendants Kadir and Nur were longtime associates of JAM leaders. Defendant Kareem was also preparing to send an emissary overseas to present the plan to extremist networks there when law enforcement stepped in to disrupt it.

“Once again, terrorists have plotted against New York, and once more NYPD detectives and FBI agents joined forces to deny them. A disaster has been averted. Congratulations to both in thwarting this plot, and to the Port Authority Police Department with whom the NYPD continues to work closely to protect JFK International Airport,” stated Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

“This announcement demonstrates, once again, that there are people continuously plotting violence against our vital assets and our homeland. This investigation and the arrests that are related to it prove that the cooperation of state, local, and federal law enforcement can produce real results that help to make our state and nation safer,” stated Michael Balboni, Deputy Secretary for Public Safety, New York State Department of Homeland Security.

If convicted of conspiring to attack JFK airport with explosives, each of the defendants faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The charges in the complaint are merely allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeffrey Knox and Marshall L. Miller of the Violent Crimes and Terrorism Section.

Minority Leader John Boehner broke down on the House floor last week in the debate to fund more war in Iraq.  He is a weirdo, for sure, but he’s really big in Ohio.  The Democrats were afraid to go on vacation over Memorial Day and leave the Bush war in Iraq unfunded.  It apparently never registered on them that it would be Bush who is going on vacation that would be vetoeing the bill to fund his war in Iraq.  What was especialy sickening is that out of the 17 Democrats who voted against the war in Iraq, 11 of them voted for this cave-in bill.

But the Democrats are saving me money.  I don’t contribute to them anymore.

Better Late Than Never

By Richard Walrath

What’s the connection, if any, between CBS and Comedy Central?  Wearing the same black suit and shirt — no tie — Al Gore showed up on the same night on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, followed by his appearance on the David Letterman Late Night Show.  Do CBS and Comedy Central have adjoining studios?

How long is it going to take CBS to figure out Jon Stewart might be their answer to getting out of last place in the nightly news?  Stewart does have one advantage — he gives you the news a day late.  But that’s better than never getting it at all.
