Whether the tradition began in the Americas with the Green Corn Dance of the Cherokees, or on May 27, 1578 in Newfoundland, or in 1607 in Popham Colony in Maine, or with the Pilgrim’s Thanksgiving Feast of 1621, the day of giving thanks is just around the corner. President George Washington originally signed a proclamation on October 3, 1789 “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” to be observed on November 26th.
The day of giving thanks was changed several times by subsequent Presidents until a Joint Resolution issued by Congress on October 6, 1941 declared the last Thursday of November as the National Holiday.
