Frivolous is in the Eye of the Beholder

By Patricia L Johnson

“House GOP File Lawsuit Against Obama”. The headline can’t help but grab the attention of the average reader while the first line of the story reads as follows:

House Republicans on Friday filed a long-awaited lawsuit accusing President Barack Obama of overstepping his executive authority when implementing his signature health care law.

Pasted from <http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/house-gop-file-lawsuit-against-obama-n253456>

Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but it appears to me this story is trying to tell readers that the Republican controlled U.S. House of Representatives filed a lawsuit against the President of the United States on November 21, 2014.

That’s not quite the way I read it, but you be the judge.

Following is a copy of the title page of Case No. 14-cv-01967 filed by Jonathan Turley, Lead Attorney, on November 21, 2014, in the District Court, for the District of Columbia.

While the United States House of Representatives is filing suit against Sylvia Mathews Burwell, and Jacob L Lew in their capacities as Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services and Secretary of the United States Department of the Treasury, I fail to see the name Barack H. Obama, President of the United States. listed as a defendant to this action taken by the U.S. House.

clip_image002

Aside from the entire world thinking the U.S. House of Representatives is suing the POTUS, the resolution that was sponsored by Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) and passed the house on July 30, 2014 by a vote of 225 Yeas to 201 Nays (Roll No. 468), states:

H.Res.676 – Providing for authority to initiate litigation for actions by the President or other executive branch officials inconsistent with their duties under the Constitution of the United States.

Pasted from <https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-resolution/676>

The Republicans voted to “initiate litigation for actions by the President”, so why is the President’s name clearly missing from the list of defendants? Could it be he did nothing that could even remotely be construed as inconsistent with his duties under the Constitution?

When legislation is introduced into the House it goes to various committees for review, discussion and a vote. In this instance, the resolution was referred to the Rules Committee in the U.S. House which consists of a total of nine Republicans and four Democrats. With a 2:1 ratio of Republicans to Democrats, it’s not difficult to determine how we came up with a vote of seven YEAS and four NAYS (with two members not voting) from the Rules Committee. A simple majority of members present was all that was needed to pass. The final report issued by the Rules Committee is H. Rept. 113-561, which was then voted on by the full House.

Included in the legislation were several amendments.

· Require disclosure of cost of lawsuit each week.

· Avoid conflict of interest by prohibiting hiring anyone that lobbies for or has any financial stake in the ACA.

· Require lawsuit to be paid for with Benghazi Select Committee budget funds.

· Require House’s lawyers to explain likelihood of success in lawsuit and overcoming “legal obstacles presented by Supreme Court precedent”.

· Require explanation of how the lawsuit will be funded and which programs will be cut.

There were several more amendments filed and each and every amendment, no matter how sound, was voted down by the Republican majority on the Rules Committee.

Short of going out and obtaining signatures from the millions of persons currently insured under the Affordable Care Act, stating they no longer want to participate, Republicans in this country have done everything humanely possible to have the PPACA ruled unconstitutional.  The fact the U.S. House has voted 53 separate times to repeal the law sort of gives you the impression they’re not real fond of it, but enough is enough.

There have been so many lawsuits filed, by so many different organizations, states, etc. that it would be almost impossible to count, but aside from putting more money in the pockets of the attorneys involved, what good has it done? The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is still here and still providing healthcare to millions.

If there are any lawsuits that should be filed in this country, it’s for “We the People” to file a lawsuit against the Republican members of the United States House of Representatives, for not doing their job.  This is the same party that has fought to put an end to  ‘frivolous” lawsuits for years.

I personally would not hesitate to call this most recent act by the Republican controlled U.S. House of Representatives a frivolous lawsuit if it wasn’t for the fact that this particular legal action is going to cost you, the American public, millions if not billions of dollars.

1 in 30 U.S. Children Homeless, while Billions spent on election cycle

www.homelesschildrenamerica.org/mediadocs/280.pdf.

America’s Youngest Outcasts is a November 2014 report issued by The National Center on Family Homelessness organization indicating there are 2.5 million children left homeless each year in this country.

In plain English that means that 1 out of every 30 children in the United States is now homeless.

Between 2012 and 2013 the number increased 8 percent nationally.  31 states plus the District of Columbus increased, with 13 states and the District of Columbia indicating an increase of more than 10 percent.

What kind of a country has the United States become where 1 out of every 30 children do not have a warm bed to sleep in every night yet billions upon billions of dollars are spent on elections?

The average number of students in any U.S. classroom is roughly 25, which means that at least one child in every classroom, in every school, in every district, in every county, in every state in the U.S. is homeless.

According to the Federal Election Commission during the 2013-2014 election cycle there was a total of $1,338,919,790.00 disbursed.  $793,137,641.00 spent on U.S. House candidates and $545,782,149.00 spent on U.S. Senate candidates.  2014 House and Senate Campaign Finance

Where would these children be had that same amount of money been spent on them?

Are you part of the problem or are you part of the solution?  When you voted in the 2014 mid-term election did you bother to look into the votes your candidate of choice made in the past on programs that impact the children of this country?

Maybe you should check it out!

Have you ever traveled during the holiday season and come across a tiny town that was all lit up for the holidays? Towns that just seem to pop up out of nowhere; resemble old-fashioned villages and take your breath away with their beauty?

A group of friends were going out for dinner at the inn in town, on an evening when the snow had just fallen, and as they went around the bend, they were delighted to see this tiny old-fashioned town all decorated for the holidays. The newly fallen snow, combined with the glow of the Christmas lights and decorations brought back fond memories for the group and they spent the entire night reminiscing and admiring the beauty before them. The sight had such an impact on the group they wanted to share the experience with others and the concept of a miniature lighted Christmas village was born.

Department 56 was originally a part of Bachman’s, a retail florist located in Minneapolis. Bachman’s identified the various departments within the floral shop with numbers and the number assigned to imports of wholesale gifts was “56”. Department 56 is still headquartered in Eden Prairie, MN and is a leader in giftware, collectibles and decorations. It is best known for their hand-crafted lighted villages and home decorations. It is now a part of the ENESCO family with International headquarters in Itasca, IL.

In 1976 the first set of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings was introduced and called The Original Snow Village®. This set was retired in 1979 in order to accommodate the 12 new introductions and the first village accessories.

In 1984 the Heritage Village Collection® was developed and its first release was The Dickens Village Series® consisting of seven shops and a church.

In 1986 the Heritage Village Collection was expanded by adding The New England Village Series® and The Alpine Village Series®. In addition, the world of Snowbabies™ was also introduced in 1986.

In 1987 the Heritage Village collection expanded once again, with Christmas in the City® and the Little Town of Bethlehem®

By 1988 Department 56 had reached sales of $56 million and was forced to move into a larger 150,000 sq. ft. distribution center.

Every few years thereafter more and more additions were added to the Village collections as you can see from the following listing.

Alpine Village Series®

Happy 239th Birthday United States Marine Corps – November 10, 2014

The United States Marine Corps was born on November 10, 1775 when the Second Continental Congress provided legislation for “two Battalions of Marines”. The full resolution reads as follows and the original hand written copy may be viewed at the following link: View Original Resolution (PDF)

JOURNAL OF THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS

(Philadelphia) Friday, November 10, 1775

Resolved, That two Battalions of marines be raised, consisting of one Colonel, two Lieutenant Colonels, two Majors, and other officers as usual in other regiments; and that they consist of an equal number of privates with other battalions; that particular care be taken, that no persons be appointed to office, or enlisted into said Battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve to advantage by sea when required; that they be enlisted and commissioned to serve for and during the present war between Great Britain and the colonies, unless dismissed by order of Congress: that they be distinguished by the names of the first and second battalions of American Marines, and that they be considered as part of the number which the continental Army before Boston is ordered to consist of.

Ordered, That a copy of the above be transmitted to the General.

Pasted from <https://www.mcu.usmc.mil/historydivision/Pages/Speeches/ContinentalCongress.aspx>

The official Motto of the United States Marine Corps is “Semper Fidelis” [1] (“Always Faithful”) and was adopted around 1883. Prior to 1883 there were three different mottoes used by the Marine Corps, but all three were considered traditional rather than official.

· “Fortitudine” [2] (“With Fortitude”)

· “By Sea and by Land” – a translation of the Royal Marine’s “Per Mare, Per Terram”

· “To the Shores of Tripoli”, subsequently revised to: “From the Halls of the Montezumas to the Shores of Tripolli”

The birthday of the Marine Corps was not always celebrated on November 10. It was only after Major. Edwin McClellan, Officer-In-Charge, Historical Section, Headquarters Marine Corps, suggested to John A. Lejeune, Major General Commandant of the Marine Corps, in a memo dated October 21, 1921 that November 10 be declared a Marine Corps holiday that could be celebrated by everyone in the Corps. Major McClellan further suggested in his memorandum that a dinner be held in Washington D.C. to celebrate with guests including prominent men in the Marine Corps, Army, Navy and descendants of the Revolution.

On November 1, 1921, Maj. Gen Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921 which reads as follows:

759. The following will be read to the command on the 10th of November, 1921, and hereafter on the 10th of November of every year. Should the order not be received by the 10th of November, 1921, it will be read upon receipt.

(1) On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name “Marine”. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.

(2) The record of our corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world’s history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation’s foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and is the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.

(3) In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term “Marine” has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.

(4) This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the corps. With it we have also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as “Soldiers of the Sea” since the founding of the Corps.

John A. Lejeune,
Major General Commandant

Pasted from <https://www.mcu.usmc.mil/historydivision/Pages/Speeches/MCBirthdayMessage.aspx>

History records indicate the first ‘Birthday Ball, as suggested in McClellan’s memorandum to Major Lejeune, was not held until 1925, when it was held in Philadelphia, PA. The first cake apparently was not introduced into the festivities until 1935 in Quantico, Virginia. Although the origin of this particular tradition remains unknown, it is customary to serve the first piece of birthday cake to the oldest Marine present and the second piece to the youngest Marine present.

Although Marine Corps Birthday celebrations are different through the Corps, they are all held on November 10, and they all include reading of Marine Corps Order No. 47 and the Commandant’s message. The birthday party is such a major event in the U.S. Marine Corps that plans for the party begin in the summer months and continue for the next several months.

The highest honor the military can bestow upon the brave individuals that sacrifice life and limb for us, while protecting our country is the Medal of Honor. Technically there are three major branches of service, the Army, Navy and Air Force. The United States Navy/Marine Corps is a combined force so there is only one Medal of Honor, the Navy Medal of Honor for service members in either the Navy or the Marine Corps.

The Navy Medal of Honor is made of bronze and suspended by an anchor from a blue ribbon, which is worn around the neck. There are 13 white stars on the ribbon representing the original 13 states. The medal itself consists of a five pointed star. Standing in the middle is Minerva, representing the Union. She is circled by 34 stars representing the 34 states in 1861. In her left hand she holds an ax, the ancient Roman symbol of authority. In her right hand she holds a shield, which wards off the serpents held by the figure of Discord.

The back of the medal is blank to allow for the recipient’s name, date and place of deed to be engraved

Since 1862 there have been 297 Marines receiving the Medal of Honor as follows:

Philippine Insurection 1899-1902

On Veteran’s Day 2013 the United States Postal Service issued two new stamps, a current Navy version of the Medal of Honor and the second, the current Army version of the Medal of Honor. The Air Force Medal of Honor was not created until after World War II, so the postal service did not, as yet, issue a stamp for that version.

[1] It is interesting to note the motto of England’s Devonshire Regiment is also Semper Fidelis.

[2] Fortitudine is also the name of the Bulletin of the marine Corps Historical Program and you may read the current edition at the following Fortitudine Vol 38 No 2

When You Vote Tuesday Are You Voting For The Right Reason?

By Patricia L Johnson

The future of this country will be in the hands of the voters on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 and the question that each and every one of us must ask ourselves is

1. Are we voting for the right reason?

2. Are we voting for the right person?

3. Are we voting for an individual or against the person they are running against?

4. How much do we actually know about the candidate we are voting for?

5. How much research have you personally done on your candidate?

6. Do you watch one TV news channel continually or do you switch from one channel to another so that you are able to receive a variety of views on a particular story?

7. When you hear something about a politician that seems too difficult to believe, do you check into the accusation or do you just assume it’s true because most politicians are corrupt?

8. Are you voting for a candidate based on their past voting history or are you voting for a candidate based on how they say they will vote in the future?

9. Are you voting for a candidate based on his/her views on issues facing the majority of Americans?

10. How often do you read the various ‘fact checking’ websites?

If you haven’t already checked out some of the material on the following sites, you may want to take a look around before you go to the polls on Tuesday.

PolitFact.com has a section on their site called Pundit Fact that rates statements made on the air by the various news personalities and their pundit guests. These ratings do not include statements made on the air by politicians or paid spokespeople, as these are rated separately.

Just to provide you with an example of how poorly the news is being reported by some of the TV stations following is the rating for Fox News. I’m using Fox News because it has, by far, the worst rating of any of the TV stations as follows:

Of the total of 110 statements made that were fact checked:

  • 10 percent were true
  • 11 percent were mostly true
  • 18 percent were half true
  • 19 percent were mostly false
  • 32 percent were false
  •  9 percent were considered “Pants on Fire”, meaning there wasn’t a smidgen of truth in the allegation.

In other words nearly 70 percent of the statements made by Fox News are mostly false while only 30 percent contain some semblance of truth, based on fact checking completed by Pundit Fact.com

While Fox News is the worse, the other major TV stations aren’t perfect either. They all make mistakes, and in some instances intentionally twist the facts due to bias, prejudices and/or political leanings.

As voters, it is up to us to do our own fact-checking and guarantee we are voting for the right person, based on the right reasons, not hearsay, or baseless claims of wrong-doing.

Don’t forget to vote!

1.7% COLA Increase for Social Security Beneficiaries for 2015

clip_image001

By Patricia L Johnson

Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 64 million Americans will increase 1.7 percent for December 2014, according to the Social Security Administration announcement of October 22, 2014. The majority of beneficiaries will see this increase in benefits on payments they receive in January 2015.  SSI recipients will receive the increase on their December 2014 payments.

This yearly Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is tied directly to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). P.L. 92-336 established automatic increases to Social Security and SSI benefits each year based on the average Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). This calculation is based on the average CPI-W for the third calendar quarter of the last year a COLA was determined compared to the third quarter of the current year. The percentage increase (if at least 0.1 percent) then becomes the COLA increase that will become effective December of the current year. Prior to the signing of P.L. 92-336 making cost of living adjustments automatic, cost of living adjustment allowances were only made when Congress approved an increase.

The consumer price indexes for the six months in question follows.  As you can see the average for the third quarter of 2013 is 230.327, while the average for the third quarter of 2014 is 234.242.  The difference between the two averages is 3.915 [234.242-230.327].  If you take the 3.915 difference and divide it by the average for the 3rd quarter of 2014, which is 230.327 you come up with 0.016997 multiplied by 100 = 1.6997 rounded becomes 1.7 percent.

CPI-W

Monthly Consumer Price Index data for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) may be located on the Social Security Administration website.

In addition to the COLA increase additional changes for 2015 follow:

TAX RATE – Employee and Self-Employed tax rates for 2015 remain the same as they were for 2014.  7.65% for an employee and twice that amount for the Self-Employed – 15.30%.  The figures are based on 6.20% for OASDI (Social Security) and 1.45% for HI (Medicare) on all earnings.  Individuals with earned income of more than $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly) will pay an additional 0.9 percent in Medicare taxes which are not included in the rates shown above.

MAXIMUM TAXABLE EARNINGS – Maximum taxable earnings for OASDI  will be $118,500, up $1,500.00 from 2014.  There is no limit on Medicare taxes, the 1.45% will be paid on all earnings.

QUARTER OF COVERAGE – In 2015 it will take $1,220 per quarter of coverage, up $20 from 2014.

A review of the Social Security website will provide answers to any questions you may have on any of the 2015 changes.

The Blame Game in Full Swing

2014 - 10-16

By Patricia L Johnson

Earlier today I was talking to a friend on the phone. I called to see how she was doing as she is still in the hospital recuperating from surgery and during the call we discussed a few problems she was having with two people in her life.

In both instances she was only able to view the problem from her own perspective, without giving any consideration whatsoever to what the other person might be feeling or thinking.

After I explored a couple different scenarios, it was as if she was now able to see the world through rose-colored glasses. Her pessimism immediately turned into optimism at the possibilities that could lie ahead.

That conversation came back to me as I was listening to the news this afternoon. Everyone in this country is so busy trying to find someone else to blame for the spread of Ebola at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, that the ink isn’t even dry on the paper before someone else is being accused.

Whenever there is any sort of error in the workplace, whether small, or horrific as in the case of the Ebola infection, there is enough blame to go around the block several times. There is a time and place for everything however, and now is not the time to start passing the blame, calling for resignations, assigning fault, etc.

Now is the time for everyone to pitch in and see what they can personally do to help find the cause of the initial contamination, and take every measure possible to ensure that it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Now is the time to sweep politics under the rug and get on with doing whatever needs to be done to protect the health and safety of all Americans.

As far as I’ve been able to determine there has never been a case of Ebola in this country before so how would the majority of those in the medical field know the seriousness of the illness, or all the steps that are necessary to follow to ensure the disease does not spread?

We are a country that learns from its mistakes and in this instance we need to learn pretty damn quickly so we’re not sitting here a month from now with a stack of dead bodies wondering where we went wrong.

For all those out there that are opposed to ‘regulations’, this may be a difficult lesson to learn, but had regulations been put in place that made it mandatory for all medical personnel to treat patients exactly the same, wearing exactly the same protective equipment, etc., hospital to hospital, state we state, we may not have been positioned as we are now.

All the pieces have been put in place for a major Ebola outbreak in this country and it won’t be pretty, so believe me there will be more than a sufficient amount of time for everyone to spread the blame.

While they’re busy spreading the blame though, they might ask themselves a question. Thomas Eric Duncan initially went to the hospital with Ebola symptomology, but was not hospitalized because they believed he had nothing more than the flu. Why didn’t anyone treating him the first time around become infected with the disease?

“Anchor’s Aweigh”– Happy Birthday United States Navy

By Patricia L Johnson

October 13, 2014 will be the 239th birthday of the United States Navy.

Do you know what the words ‘Anchors Aweigh’ means?  A ships anchor is ‘aweigh’ when it is pulled up from the bottom of the body of water and this action is then recorded in the ship’s log.
Anchors Aweigh became the official song of the U.S. Navy in 1907.  The music was composed by Lieut. Charles A. Zimmerman, USN, and bandmaster of the Naval Academy Band.  Each year Zimmerman would compose a new march for each graduating class.  In 1906 Midshipman First Class Alfred Hart Miles, a member of the Class of 1907, expressed to Zimmerman the wishes of his classmates to have a march composed that would be “inspiring, one with a swing so it could be used as a football marching song, and one that would live forever.”
Zimmerman and Miles worked together and while Zimmerman composed the music, Miles wrote the Title and the first two stanzas in November of 1906.  Later that month the march was played at the 1906 Army-Navy football game and after many seasons of losses, Navy won!  The march was dedicated to the Academy Class of 1907 and eventually adopted as the official U.S. Navy song.
The original lyrics for the the first two verses as written by Midshipman Miles are as follows:

[Verse 1]
Stand Navy down the field, sails set to the sky.
We’ll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh.
Sail Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.

[Verse 2]
Get underway, Navy, Decks cleared for the fray,
We’ll hoist true Navy Blue So Army down your Grey-y-y-y.
Full speed ahead, Navy; Army heave to,
Furl Black and Grey and Gold and hoist the Navy, hoist the Navy Blue

A third verse was added by Midshipman Royal Lovell, Class of 1926 was written as follows:

[Verse 3]
Blue of the Seven Seas; Gold of God’s great sun
Let these our colors be Till all of time be done-n-n-ne,
By Severn shore we learn Navy’s stern call:
Faith, courage, service true With honor over, honor over all.

In 1997 MCPON John Hagen, USN (Ret) revised the lyrics to Anchors Aweigh to read as follows and this is the version sung most often today.

[Verse 1]
Stand Navy out to sea,
Fight our battle cry;
We’ll never change our course,
So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll out the TNT,
Anchors Aweigh.
Sail on to victory
And sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray!

[Verse 2]
Anchors Aweigh, my boys,
Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to foreign shores,
We sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through our last night ashore,
Drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more.
Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home.

[Verse 3]
Blue of the mighty deep:
Gold of God’s great sun.
Let these our colors be
Till all of time be done, done, done, done.
On seven seas we learn
Navy’s stern call:
Faith, courage, service true,
With honor, over honor, over all.

Lieut. Zimmerman suffered a brain hemorrhage in 1916, at the age of 54, and was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  His years of devotion to the Naval Academy did not go unnoticed and later his body was moved from St. Mary’s cemetery to the Naval Academy cemetery, where a granite monument had been erected in his name.  This monument was a gift from the Naval classes of 1916 and 1917.

Birth Certificate – United States Navy

clip_image001

By Patricia L Johnson

The United States Navy will be celebrating its 239th birthday on October 13, 2014. Please be sure to wish any current Navy personnel and all Navy Veterans a Happy Day when the 13th rolls around.

The following resolution, written by the Continental Congress, established our United States Navy and was taken from the Naval History & Heritage Command website. The Naval History & Command website is currently in the process of being redesigned, so it may not be readily accessible, but is an excellent resource for naval history.

Birth certificate U.S. Navy

The question of which came first, the chicken or the egg seems to also apply to the birth of the United States Navy. The Marines have always used a birth date of November 10, 1775, which was earlier than the inconsistent dates [March 27, 1794, and April 30, 1798] the Navy provided when questioned about its beginnings. In fact, for fifty years, from 1922 until 1972, the U.S. Navy celebrated “Navy Day” on October 27th to correspond with President Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday.

It was finally determined the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775 by providing for two warships. The Continental Congress then established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, a little less than a month later, by providing legislation for “two Battalions of Marines’.

No date had been recognized as the Navy’s birthday until 1972, when Admiral Zumwalt, Chief of Naval Operations and Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper, Director of Naval History, authorized October 13 as the date to observe the Navy’s Birthday.

The birthday for the Marines had been established by the Marine Corps Commandant in 1921.

Our United States Navy

By Patricia L Johnson

The United States Navy will be celebrating its 239th birthday on October 13, 2014. Please be sure to wish any current Navy personnel and all Navy Veterans a Happy Day when the 13th rolls around.

The current, 75th, Secretary of the Navy is Ray Mabus who began his term of office on May 19, 2009 and is the leader of both the Navy and the Marine Corps.

clip_image002[4]

Secretary of the Navy, Mabus, is responsible for an annual budget of more than $170 billion dollars and governance of almost 900,000 people, as well as an incredible number of varied ships, submarines, and aircraft.

Navy ships purple

The following statement was made back in 1781: “It follows then as certain as that night succeeds the day, that without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious.” – President George Washington, 15 November 1781, to Marquis de Lafayette. [The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources 1745-1799. vol.23. (Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1937): 341.]

Without a doubt President Washington would be very proud of our current naval force!

The backbone of our current Navy is the aircraft carrier and you may read all about them at the following link http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_print.asp?cid=4200&tid=200&ct=4&page=1 . We have several different classes of carriers and numerous carriers in a class, but we’ll just talk about one, the USS Nimitz (CVN 68). This ship was originally deployed on May 3, 1975 from Newport News, VA and has a service life of 50 years, with one refueling mid-life. In constant FY 2012 dollars, the USS Nimitz cost approximately $8.5 billion and is huge.

The length of the ship is 1,092 feet, with a beam of 134 feet and a flight deck width of 252 feet. It’s difficult to comprehend the size of the ship without a comparison, so we’ll compare it to an American football field which is 300 feet long. Think about a ship being more than three times the length of a football field and having a flight deck that is almost as wide as a football field. This carrier can hold more than 60 aircraft.

When you take into consideration the fact there are 10 Nimitz Class carriers, this class of ships alone can hold in excess of 600 aircraft.

Impressive!

CDC Health Alert Advisory – Acute Neurologic Illness with Focal Limb Weakness of Unknown Etiology in Children

Health Alert Network logo.

This is an official

CDC HEALTH ADVISORY

Distributed via the CDC Health Alert Network
September 26, 2014, 17:00 ET
CDCHAN-00370

Summary

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working closely with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Children’s Hospital Colorado to investigate a cluster of nine pediatric patients hospitalized with acute neurologic illness of undetermined etiology. The illness is characterized by focal limb weakness and abnormalities of the spinal cord gray matter on MRI. These illnesses have occurred since August 1, 2014 coincident with an increase of respiratory illnesses among children in Colorado. The purpose of this HAN Advisory is to provide awareness of this neurologic syndrome under investigation with the aim of determining if children with similar clinical and radiographic findings are being cared for in other geographic areas. Guidance about reporting cases to state and local health departments and CDC is provided. Please disseminate this information to infectious disease specialists, intensive care physicians, pediatricians, neurologists, radiologists/neuroradiologists, infection preventionists, and primary care providers, as well as to emergency departments and microbiology laboratories.

Background

The CDPHE, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and CDC are investigating nine cases of acute neurologic illness among pediatric patients. The cases were identified during August 9–September 17, 2014 among children aged 1–18 years (median age 10 years). Most of the children were from the Denver metropolitan area. All were hospitalized. Common features included acute focal limb weakness and specific findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spinal cord consisting of non-enhancing lesions largely restricted to the gray matter. In most cases, these lesions spanned more than one level of the spinal cord. Some also had acute cranial nerve dysfunction with correlating non-enhancing brainstem lesions on MRI. None of the children experienced altered mental status or seizures. None had any cortical, subcortical, basal ganglia, or thalamic lesions on MRI. Most children reported a febrile respiratory illness in the two weeks preceding development of neurologic symptoms. In most cases, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analyses demonstrated mild-moderate pleocytosis (increased cell count in the CSF) consistent with an inflammatory or infectious process. CSF testing to date has been negative for West Nile virus and enteroviruses, including poliovirus. Nasopharyngeal specimens were positive for rhinovirus/enterovirus in six out of eight patients that were tested. Of the six positive specimens, four were typed as EV-D68, and the other two are pending typing results. Testing of other specimens is still in process. Eight out of nine children have been confirmed to be up to date on polio vaccinations. Epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of these cases are ongoing.

The United States is currently experiencing a nationwide outbreak of EV-D68 associated with severe respiratory disease. The possible linkage of this cluster of neurologic disease to this large EV-D68 outbreak is part of the current investigation. CDC is seeking information about other similar neurologic illnesses in all states, especially cases clustered in time and place. CDC has particular interest in characterizing the epidemiology and etiology of such cases.

Recommendations

  • Patients who meet the following case definition should be reported to state and local health departments:

Patients ≤21 years of age with

    1. Acute onset of focal limb weakness occurring on or after August 1, 2014;

    AND

    1. An MRI showing a spinal cord lesion largely restricted to gray matter.
  • State and local health departments should report patients meeting the case definition to CDC using a brief patient summary form (www.cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/investigation/). State health departments should send completed summary forms to CDC by email at limbweakness@cdc.gov.
  • Providers treating patients meeting the above case definition should consult with their local and state health department for laboratory testing of stool, respiratory, and cerebrospinal fluid specimens for enteroviruses, West Nile virus, and other known infectious etiologies.
  • Health departments may contact CDC for further laboratory and epidemiologic support by phone through the CDC Emergency Operations Center (770-488-7100), or by email at limbweakness@cdc.gov. Confirmation of the presence of EV-D68 currently requires typing by molecular sequencing.

For more information:

Please visit the CDC enterovirus website (http://www.cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/) for general information about enterovirus infections, including EVD-68, and for up-to-date guidance about infection control measures. What Does Religious Liberty Mean to You?

2014 - 09-27

Opinion:  Patricia L Johnson

The first day of the annual Values Voter Summit began on Friday, September 26, 2014 with leading Republicans getting together to speak at a gathering of evangelical conservatives.

Their theme for the day was ‘Religious Liberty’ and it will probably be the theme that will be carried forward throughout the 2014 midterms and the 2016 presidential race.

So, what is “Religious Liberty”?  When I think of religious liberty the First Amendment to the Constitution immediately comes to mind which reads:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Not sure what that means to others, but what it means to me is  the United States Congress does not have the right, or authority, to interfere in any way whatsoever with our religious freedoms.  In other words, we can worship any God, or God’s that we choose, we can attend, or not attend, any church of our choice, and we can believe, or not believe, in whatever, or whoever we choose as our higher power and Members of the United States Congress can do nothing to stop us.

Five of the speakers at the summit may be planning on running in the 2016 presidential election, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal,  Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.  While all five were warmly accepted by the crowd, Senator Cruz  appeared to get the most favorable response with his ‘plan to win’.

“How do we win? We defend the values that are American values,” Cruz said. “We stand for life. We stand for marriage. We stand for Israel.”

Republicans may say they ‘stand for life’, but do they?  Republicans are the reason we’re in the Middle East right now and will continue to be fighting a war that cannot be won for decades to come.  As of 10:00 EDT on September 25, 2014 we have lost 6,836 men and women in the military, with 52,239 wounded.  What kind of ‘stand for life’ is that?  If we’re going to stand for life, shouldn’t we do everything humanely possible to ensure the men and women in our military do not lose theirs?

Republicans may say they stand for marriage but do they?

In the year 2000 the U.S. had a population of 281,421,906, with 2,315,000 marriages.  [Excludes data for Louisiana.]

By 2011, the U.S. population had increased to 311,591,917, with 2,118,000 marriages.  [Excludes data for Louisiana].

In other words, while the population increased, the rate of marriage decreased tremendously from 8.2 percent per 1,000 in 2000 to 6.8 percent per 1,000 in 2011.  Statistically fewer people get married and divorced during recessions because they cannot afford to, so if the Republicans truly stood for marriage what they  might consider doing is removing themselves from their pulpits, going back into the halls of Congress and allocating funds to create jobs, or increasing the minimum wage so  more young people in this country can afford to be married.   While President Obama has done a magnificent job of creating jobs with very little assistance from Congress, it takes both parties negotiating and coordinating with each other for a country to forge ahead.

And last but not least  ‘We stand for Israel’.

In response to the events of 9/11, when we were attacked by Al-Qaeda, the United States attacked Afghanistan on October 7, 2001.

Why were we attacked by Al-Qaeda?

On December 27, 2001 Osama Bin Laden released a video to Al-Jazeera regarding various events including the 9/11 attack and BBC posted the following excerpt from the video:

“Terrorism against America deserves to be praised because it was a response to injustice, aimed at forcing America to stop its support for Israel, which kills our people.”

Even though Israel is one of the reasons why America is at war in the Middle East, America has always ‘stood for Israel’.  in fact, the 2012 budget amount submitted to Congress in February of 2011 by President Obama for a particular weapons system in Israel was doubled by the Republican controlled House on H.R. 1540. It was one of  only three areas where the amount allocated was more than the amount requested in the President’s budget. Would you care to guess what was decreased in order to provide Israel with the additional funding?

The latest war between Israel and Gaza left approximately 2000 Palestinians dead, (459 children and 239 women) with an estimated 10,000 Palestinians injured; compared to 64 Israeli soldiers killed, as well as two Israel civilians and one foreign national.  In addition a few dozen Israelis were injured.  Standing up for Israel, should mean standing up for peace in the region, not seeing how much military aid we can supply to Israel.

The hostilities against the Palestinians was so widespread that an independent inquiry team was formed, by the United Nations Human Rights Council, to investigate violations of international human rights and freedoms due to Israeli military operations.

The crowd at the annual Voters Values Summit was described by the media as a gathering of  “evangelical conservatives” and I’ll ask the same question now that I asked approximately 30 months ago in the following article “Conservatism – What is it and What Does It Mean?”

If death and destruction somehow fall into the category of American values, it may be time to start rethinking the entire system of values in this country.

Experimental therapies: growing interest in the use of whole blood or plasma from recovered Ebola patients (convalescent therapies)

Ebola situation assessment – 26 September 2014

Background

Ebola virus disease currently has no vaccines or medicines approved by national regulatory authorities for use in humans save for the purpose of compassionate care.

To date, the virus has infected 6242 people and killed 2909 of them. These figures, which are far greater than those from all previous Ebola outbreaks combined, are known by WHO to vastly underestimate the true scale of the epidemic.

The Ebola epidemic ravaging parts of West Africa is the most severe acute public health emergency seen in modern times. Never before in recorded history has a biosafety level four pathogen infected so many people so quickly, over such a broad geographical area, for so long.

On 11 August, a group of experts convened by WHO reached consensus that the use of experimental medicines and vaccines under the exceptional circumstances of the Ebola epidemic is ethically acceptable.

Following that advice, WHO convened (from 4–5 September) a consultation on potential Ebola therapies and vaccines.

The meeting was attended by more than 200 experts from around the world, including West Africa, though bans and restrictions on international flights to and from that region diminished the numbers significantly.

The meeting aimed to identify the most promising candidate vaccines and experimental therapies and map out the next most urgent steps to take.

The experts agreed to prioritize convalescent blood and plasma therapies for further investigation. That decision further stimulated already intense interest, with the result that new knowledge is expected to grow fairly quickly.

This assessment looks at what is known about the efficacy of convalescent therapies and the potential role they might play in improving clinical care and reducing the unacceptably high number of deaths.

The current evidence base: limited data – from 1976 up to now

Convalescent therapy was first used for a young woman infected with Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire) in 1976 – the year the virus first emerged. The woman was treated with plasma from a person who survived infection with the closely-related Marburg virus. She had less clinical bleeding than other Ebola patients, but died within days.

During the 1995 Ebola outbreak in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of Congo, whole blood collected from recovered patients was administered to eight patients. Seven of the eight recovered.

However, as the study did not include a control group, no firm conclusions could be reached concerning whether the treatment alone was responsible for the favourable clinical outcome or even contributed to this outcome in some way.

In the current outbreak, convalescent therapies have been used in a few patients. The numbers are too small to support any conclusions about efficacy.

In one well-known case, an American doctor, who became infected while working in Monrovia, Liberia, received whole blood from a recovered patient while still in Monrovia.

He likewise fully recovered, though it is not possible to determine whether that recovery can be attributed to convalescent therapy, the administration of the experimental medicine, ZMapp, or the excellent supportive care he received in the United States.

In another well-documented case, a foreign medical doctor, who was infected in Sierra Leone, has been improving following outstanding supportive care. He did not receive treatment with any experimental therapy.

In yet another case, an American doctor, who became infected while working in Liberia, was subsequently treated in the US. As part of that treatment, he received a transfusion of convalescent plasma from blood donated by the first case mentioned above. The infusion was well-tolerated.

Yesterday, he was declared by his attending physicians and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be “virus-free”. He is weak but fully recovered.

Again, as he also received the experimental medicine TKM-EBV, together with outstanding supportive care, it is impossible to know which component of care contributed most – or at all – to his recovery.

The hospital where he was treated will share clinical lessons learned with doctors working in West Africa.

As the epidemic worsens, interest in convalescent therapies grows

WHO has been encouraged by the growth of interest in convalescent therapies as an already bad epidemic gets worse.

In the three hardest-hit countries, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, health systems have begun to buckle under the pressure of closed or overflowing hospitals, the difficulties of staffing newly opened treatment centres, and the exceptionally large number of Ebola deaths among health care workers.

The number of cases continues to grow exponentially. The number of treatment beds is grossly and visibly inadequate. Good supportive clinical care is becoming increasingly difficult to implement.

The need to expand the current very limited arsenal of clinical tools is self-evident.

WHO has been approached by several donors, foundations, public health agencies, and development partners seeking guidance and advice.

Major questions need to be answered about the safety and efficacy of convalescent therapies, and the feasibility of implementation in countries with shattered health systems and an acute shortage of medical staff.

WHO is also being asked to assess whether rapid scaling up of convalescent therapy is feasible to an extent that could begin to reduce the estimated 70.8% case fatality rate seen consistently across the three outbreak sites.

Some partners and donors are asking for rough estimates of what needs to be in place to support rapid implementation on the largest possible scale. They have questions about the number of staff needed and their training requirements, safety risks and how to manage them, laboratory capacities and how to enhance them, specific needs for equipment and supplies, and what all of this might cost.

As initial supplies of these therapies will inevitably be limited, questions about which groups should have priority access also need to be addressed.

WHO is currently holding discussions with health experts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. These discussions aim to identify practical needs for implementation and potential bottlenecks that could stand in the way.

One great appeal of this drive to assess and introduce convalescent therapies is the opportunity to strengthen basic public health infrastructures by helping these countries develop good quality blood services.

The list of common and severe health problems that could benefit from safe and well-functioning blood services is long – ranging from malaria, dengue, Lassa fever, and yellow fever to complications of childbirth and injuries following accidents and traffic crashes.

The current situation is so dire that, in several areas that include capital cities, many of these common diseases and health conditions are barely being managed at all.

Technical guidance for experts

Early next week, WHO is issuing new interim guidance on Use of convalescent whole blood or plasma collected from patients recovered from Ebola virus disease for transfusion during outbreaks.

The document is addressed to national health authorities and blood transfusion services.

A link to the new document will be added here once it is released.

A Wing, a Prayer and a ¼” Allen Wrench

clip_image002

By Patricia L Johnson

There is basically nothing that I am not able to do with a piece of paper and a computer, but when it comes to anything mechanical or electrical forget it, I’m totally out of my realm, and if something breaks and I don’t really need it I don’t particularly care whether or not it gets repaired.

Such is the case with my dishwasher and garbage disposal. The garbage disposal decided it was overworked and simply wasn’t going to do anything constructive anymore so I thought okay, one of these days I’ll get it fixed.

A few weeks later the dishwasher played the same game, only this time I did call the repairman and the dishwasher worked its charm for at least a day or two before it went off the deep end. I was brought up to believe that when you did a job, you did it to the best of your ability and you didn’t give up until the work was perfect. Obviously, that isn’t something that’s taught much anymore, or at least not to the repairmen I’ve been using.

I simply don’t have the patience to deal with anyone that doesn’t do a good job so my tendency is to replace items rather than have them repaired, especially if I’ve had them for any length of time. It was going to be far less aggravating for me to buy a new dishwasher/ disposal than to have some clown come out again, and repair something that they obviously didn’t know how to repair.

Bright and early this morning I sent Brian (our regular contractor) a text asking how much he was going to charge to install a new garbage disposal and dishwasher and when he would be available. We decided on next week so I started gathering the information off the garbage disposal and the dishwasher so I could order duplicates.

I couldn’t read part of the information on the garbage disposal, but there was a phone number so I called the manufacturer to ask them what model number I would need to purchase as a replacement. The salesperson advised the unit was only a few years old and might still be under warranty if I had the receipt. I explained my filing system was non-existent so it was best to assume I didn’t have a receipt, at which time the salesperson asked if I had attempted to troubleshoot the unit.

“Yep, I turned it on and it doesn’t work”. The young man then asked me what happened when I turned it on and I explained it would make a buzzing sound, but then would stop making noise.  His next question was whether or not I had a ¼” Allen Wrench, and of course my answer was “I don’t know”. I knew what an Allen Wrench was, but didn’t have a clue they came in different sizes.

His next comment totally blew my mind because I was talking to the sales representative at the company that manufacturers these units. His job was to sell, sell, sell, wasn’t it?

He provided me with all the information I needed to either buy a replacement and or upgrade the current unit, but he asked me to try something before I went out and purchased a new unit. He told me to take a ¼’ Allen Wrench and insert the short side in the hole in the middle of the bottom of the unit, turn it clockwise one time completely around, then turn it counter-clockwise one time completely around, then twist it back and forth to make sure it turned easily. When I was finished I was to turn on the water and turn on the disposal.

After I found an Allen wrench and dropped it more times than I care to admit, I finally got it turned completely around in both directions, turning easily and I turned on the water and the disposal.

Voila’

Guess what folks; some of the manufacturers out there really do want to provide excellent service.  Needless to say I am thrilled that I don’t have to go through the hassle of replacing the current unit, and so was my husband until I handed him my repair bill for services rendered.

CDC HEALTH ADVISORY

Distributed via the CDC Health Alert Network
September 12, 2014, 17:00 ET (5:00 pm ET)
CDCHAN-00369

Summary

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working closely with hospitals and local and state health departments to investigate recent increases in hospitalizations of patients with severe respiratory illness. Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) has been detected in specimens from children with severe illness in Missouri and Illinois. Investigations into suspected clusters in other jurisdictions are ongoing. The purpose of this HAN Advisory is to provide awareness of EV-D68 as a possible cause of acute unexplained respiratory illness, and to provide guidance to state health departments and health care providers. Please disseminate this information to infectious disease specialists, intensive care physicians, pediatricians, internists, infection preventionists, and primary care providers, as well as to emergency departments and microbiology laboratories.

Background

Enteroviruses are associated with various clinical symptoms, from mild to severe. EV-D68 causes primarily respiratory illness, although the full spectrum of disease remains unclear. EV-D68 was originally isolated in 1962 and, since then, has been reported rarely in the United States. Small clusters of EV-D68 associated with respiratory illness were reported in the United States during 2009–2010.There are no available vaccines or specific treatments for EV-D68, and clinical care is supportive.

In August 2014, a children’s hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and one in Chicago, Illinois, notified CDC of increases in pediatric patients examined and hospitalized with severe respiratory illness, including some admitted to pediatric intensive care units. Both hospitals also reported recent increases in detection of rhinovirus/enterovirus, in initial screening with a respiratory virus panel. Nasopharyngeal specimens from patients with recent onset of severe symptoms from both facilities were sequenced by the CDC Picornavirus Laboratory. EV-D68 was identified in 19 of 22 specimens from Kansas City and in 11 of 14 specimens from Chicago. Admissions for severe respiratory illness have continued at both facilities at rates higher than expected for this time of year. CDC has been notified by various states of similar clusters of respiratory illness, though confirmation of EV-D68 in these potential clusters is still under way.

Of these severely ill patients who were confirmed positive for EV-D68 from both hospitals, all presented with difficulty breathing and hypoxemia, and some with wheezing. Notably, most patients were afebrile at presentation and throughout the hospital course. Approximately two thirds of cases had a previous medical history of asthma or wheezing, but both hospitals reported some patients with no known underlying respiratory illness. Ages ranged from 6 weeks through 16 years, with median ages of 4 and 5 years in Kansas City and Chicago, respectively. Most patients were admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. Of the 30 patients who were positive for EV-D68, two required mechanical ventilation (one of whom also received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and six required bilevel positive airway pressure ventilation. It should be noted that specimens from only the most severe cases have been typed at this time, and so these findings may not reflect the full spectrum of disease.

Additional details about these EV-D68 clusters can be found in the September 8, 2014, MMWR Early Release: (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm63e0908a1.htm?s_cid=mm63e0908a1_e)

Recommendations

Clinical Care:

  • Health care providers should consider EV-D68 as a possible cause of acute, unexplained severe respiratory illness, even in the absence of fever.
  • Although the findings to date have been in children, EV-D68 may also affect adults.

Laboratory Testing:

  • Providers should consider laboratory testing of respiratory specimens for enteroviruses when the cause of respiratory infection in severely ill patients is unclear.
  • Confirmation of the presence of EV-D68 requires typing by molecular sequencing.
  • Providers may contact state or local health departments for further enterovirus typing. CDC is available for consultation.
  • Health departments may contact CDC for further enterovirus typing.
  • CDC is currently prioritizing respiratory specimens from patients with severe respiratory illness who are known to be positive for rhinovirus/enterovirus from initial screening assays.
  • Please visit the CDC EV-D68 website (http://www.cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/about/EV-D68.html) for information on specimen submission. Completion of a brief patient summary form is required with each specimen submission to CDC.

Infection Control:

  • Routes of transmission for EV-D68 are not fully understood.
  • Infection control guidelines for hospitalized patients with EV-D68 infection should include standard precautions, and contact precautions in certain situations, as is recommended for all enteroviruses (http://www.cdc.gov/hicpac/pdf/isolation/Isolation2007.pdf).
  • As EV-D68 is a cause of clusters of respiratory illness, similar to rhinoviruses, droplet precautions also should be considered as an interim recommendation until there is more definitive information available on appropriate infection control.
  • As EV-D68 is a non-enveloped virus, environmental disinfection of surfaces in healthcare settings should be performed using a hospital-grade disinfectant with an EPA label claim for any of several non-enveloped viruses (e.g. norovirus, poliovirus, rhinovirus). Disinfectant products should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific label claim and in a manner consistent with environmental infection control recommendations (http://www.cdc.gov/hicpac/pdf/guidelines/eic_in_HCF_03.pdf).

Reporting:

  • Providers should report suspected clusters of severe respiratory illness to local and state health departments.
  • EV-D68 is not nationally notifiable, but state and local health departments may have additional guidance on reporting.
  • Health departments may contact CDC for epidemiologic support. Please contact Dr. Claire Midgley (cmidgley@cdc.gov) with brief descriptions of possible clusters.

For more information:
For additional information, please consult the CDC enterovirus D68 website: (http://www.cdc.gov/non-polio-enterovirus/about/EV-D68.html)

Ebola Situation Report – September 5, 2014

www.who.int/csr/disease/ebola/5-september-2014-en.pdf?ua=1.

The second in a series of reports from WHO on Ebola

Note:  Total of probable, confirmed and suspected cases in West Africa was 3,685 as of August 31, 2014 with 1,841 deaths.

Affected countries:  Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone

Folks who have had the Ebola virus and survived have antibodies in their blood.  The World Health Organization has approved transferring antibodies from a survivor to a patient suffering from the disease.   A 1995 study indicates 7 of 8 patients survived after receiving the blood therapy.

Many aid workers have contracted Ebola and more than likely will be the first patients treated with this therapy.

54 Consecutive Months of Private-Sector Job Growth

By Patricia L Johnson

The first thing I heard from the media today about the most recent jobs report is the word only.   Only 142,000 jobs were created in August 2014.  They failed to notice our latest job creation report indicating 142,000 jobs were created puts us over the 10 million mark as far as how many jobs have been created in the private sector over the past four and a half years.

According to the BLS this makes the 54th consecutive month of positive job growth for the United States, which also happens to be the longest period in U.S. history of positive job growth.  Maybe the media thinks it’s only 142,000, but it’s an excellent record for this country as well as for this Administration.

While the Employment Situation Report was issued September 5, 2014 for August, the ADP National Employment Report for August was issued yesterday, September 4, 2014.  This report indicated there were a total of 204,000 jobs added to the private sector in August.

The difference between the two reports is ADP information is obtained from actual non-farm, private sector, payroll data transactions, seasonally adjusted.   The Bureau of Labor Statistics Report data is obtained from data supplied via survey to the government by the various companies/individuals.

The ADP National Employment Report began in 2006 and using  new methodology, which was designed for ADP by Moody’s Analytics, has brought them within 96 percent of revised BLS figures, so they have a little more work to do before their reports can be considered ‘gospel’.

If you’re familiar with the monthly jobs report prepared by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, you already know that the 142,000 is a preliminary number and will be changed several times over the next few months as more and more late reports come in from the various businesses.

The midterm elections are only 60 days away so it wouldn’t be at all surprising if some businesses were intentionally turning in late survey data to make it appear as if the job market is magically disappearing before our very eyes.

With that thought in mind, I prepared a little chart comparing ADP data to BLS data and if nothing else it’s an interesting comparison.  Although the two lines are not exact duplicates, one does more or less eventually follow the other with its ups and downs.  What is most interesting is on a year to year comparison, there is only a difference of 3,000 jobs between the two sources which is pretty close.  How close it would be if actual numbers were used rather than numbers rounded to thousands is difficult to say.

2014 - 09-05 ADP

Although the month of August only brought about 142,000 new jobs, it was enough to lower the U.S. unemployment rate from 7.2 percent in August of 2013 to 6.1 percent in August of 2014, which is great news!

If we’re looking this good now, what are we going to look like when the minimum wage gets raised?

The U.S. Deficit as a Percentage of GDP

By Patricia L Johnson

The U.S. deficit has been a major topic of discussion, especially when it gets close to an election.  The opposing party has continually used the deficit as a topic of conversation to indicate how poorly the U.S. economy is doing.

Pictures always speak louder than words and my original intent was to prepare a chart to show how the deficit, as a percentage of GDP, which is the defining number,  has decreased continually over the past five-year period, but I found something better.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) completed a report in April of 2014 which includes a chart showing this relationship.  Along with the chart the CBO made the following statement:

As it usually does each spring, CBO has updated the baseline budget projections that it released earlier in the year. CBO now estimates that if the current laws that govern federal taxes and spending do not change, the budget deficit in fiscal year 2014 will be $492 billion. Relative to the size of the economy, that deficit—at 2.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP)—will be nearly a third less than the $680 billion shortfall in fiscal year 2013, which was equal to 4.1 percent of GDP. This will be the fifth consecutive year in which the deficit has declined as a share of GDP since peaking at 9.8 percent in 2009 (see the figure below).

2014 - 09-03-a

Since their April report was issued CBO updated their estimates on August 27, 2014 and are now projecting the deficit as a percentage of GDP to be 2.9 percent for 2014 rather than the 2.8 originally estimated.    Since CBO uses actual numbers for past years and projected numbers for the current year, the 2.9 percent could go up or down, but as it stands right now our deficit as a percentage of GDP has dropped a full 6.9 percent over the past five years as follows:

Quite an achievement for this administration!

Setting the Record Straight on Iraq and the Islamic State

Map picture

The Levant [as in Islamic State of the Levant] is the eastern Mediterranean area and consists of the island of Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and part of southern Turkey.

Opinion:  Patricia L Johnson

Football season hasn’t technically begun, yet there is no shortage of Monday-morning-quarterbacks when it comes to the situation in Iraq and what to do about the Islamic State.  Anyone, that’s anyone has thrown in their two cents on who is to blame for the situation in Iraq, whether or not to put boots on the ground, and whether or not to spread the chaos to Syria.

This disaster began on March 19, 2003 when the United States, with the aid of our allies attacked the Republic of Iraq without knowing all the facts and quite simply that’s the same situation we are in right now with the Islamic State.  We do not know all the facts, yet we are giving thought to spreading the war to yet another Islamic country.

Many individuals blame the Republicans, while others blame Democrats for the situation we’re in, but I’m going to place the blame squarely on the shoulders of the United States media for not doing their job.  Their job, as I see it, is to report the news and keep the American public informed of any and all news that affects us.  Instead, the majority report their biased opinion of what someone else has already reported and not too many are getting the facts out.

The facts are as follows:  When we waged our ‘shock and awe’ campaign against the people of the Republic of Iraq in 2003, without justification, we sealed the deal on our future.  At the time we waged war, there were an estimated 24 million people living in Iraq. 97 percent were Muslims, while an estimated 3 percent were Christians or practiced other faiths.  Within the 97 percent Muslim religion, 60-65 percent were Shi’a Muslim, while 32-37 percent were Sunni Muslim.   The ethnic groups were 75-80 percent Arab, 15-20 percent Kurdish and 5 percent Turkoman, Assyrian or other.

At the time of our attack the Shi’a’s were the majority, yet the Sunni’s, under the direction of Chief of State, President Saddam Hussein, were in control of the 18 governorates in Iraq.  After our attacks a new government was put in place with Shi’a’s having majority control of the 18 governorates, but many officials were killed during their first few months in office.

Saddam Hussein was a member of the Ba’ath Party and southern Shi’a’s as well as Kurds opposed the Ba’ath Party’s political philosophy of combining the entire Arab World into one single state with a motto of “Unity, Liberty and Socialism”.  The Ba’ath Party was never confined to Iraq, its power was limited to Iraq and Syria, but it had branches in other Arab countries.

There doesn’t appear to be a standard definition for Arab World but it is more or less accepted that any member of the Arab League is part of the Arab World.  Currently, the Arab League consists of 22 members, with names listed below.  You may have read that there are only 21 members, due to the suspension of Syria, but the Arab League is still considering Syria a member so the total is 22.  These 22 countries had a combined projected population of approximately 371 million as of July 2013.

Some politicians and members of the media are suggesting the Islamic State basically came into being fairly recently, which is simply not true.  The Islamic State is non-other than Tanzim Qa’idat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn its Arab name, which was originally added to the listing of terrorist groups on March 2, 2005 as Al-Qa’ida in Iraq.

While you are probably most familiar with the name Al-Qa’ida, more recently the organization has been called:

ISIS = Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

ISIL = Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant

and finally IS = Islamic State.

The Islamic State organization has also been known under the following names: Al-Qa’ida in Iraq; Al-Qa’ida in Iraq – Zarqawi; Al-Qa’ida of Jihad in the Land of the Two Rivers; Al-Qa’ida of Jihad Organization in the Land of the Two Rivers; Al-Tawhid; Al-Tawhid and al-Jihad; Brigades of Tawhid; Islamic State of Iraq; Dawla al-Islamiya; Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa as-Sham; Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham; Jama’at al-Tawhid wa’al-Jihad; Kateab al-Tawhid; Mujahidin Shura Council; Qaida of the Jihad in the Land of the Two Rivers; Tanzeem Qa’idat al Jihad Bilad al Raafidaini; Tanzim Qa’idat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn; The al-Zarqawi network; The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant; The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham; The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria; The Islamic Caliphate; The Islamic Caliphate State; The Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria; The Monotheism and Jihad Group; The Organization Base of Jihad Country of the Two Rivers; The Organization Base of Jihad Mesopotamia; The Organization of Jihad’s Base in the Country of the Two Rivers; Unity and Holy Struggle; Unity and Holy War; Unity and Jihad Group.

It was June 29, 2014 (the first day of Ramadan) when an Islamic caliphate was proclaimed for the area the Islamic State now controls and their name was changed to Dawla al-Islamiya, or the Islamic State.   The methods incorporated by this group are no different than they were back in 2005 when they were first declared a terrorist organization.  Their expansion, the announcement of an Islamic caliphate and the name change are the only differences.

Many politicians and pundits have determined the reason the Islamic State has expanded is due to the fact a residual force was not left in Iraq, and of course they blame President Obama, which is also incorrect.

On December 31, 2008 the United Nations Security Council Mandate would have expired which was the legal basis for the United States having forces in Iraq.  On December 14, 2008 President George W. Bush signed both the Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA), and Security Agreement (SOFA).  President Bush was basically caught between a rock and a hard place and had to sign whatever the Iraqi parliament provided to him; otherwise our troops would have to be out of Iraq by December 31, 2008, which was completely impossible.

The SOFA, as it was written, required US forces to withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009 and for all U.S. forces to be out by December 31, 2011.  It called for warrants to be issued for searches that were not related to combat; required criminal charges to be assessed for any prisoner held more than 24 hours; and stated U.S. contractors working for U.S. forces would be subject to Iraqi criminal law.

It was thought that with time, the United States would be able to amend the treaty and leave a certain number of troops in country, but the Republic of Iraq had total control of the situation and no changes could be negotiated without approval.  Needless to say the Iraqi’s had absolutely no desire to keep us in country any longer, so would not agree to anything other than minor changes.  A decision they quite possibly may be regretting.

It wouldn’t have made any difference if we left a 100 troops in Iraq, or 100,000 because sooner or later the day was going to come when U.S. troops would leave and the Iraqi’s would have to fend for themselves and they simply are not, and will not be able to do that, due to the extreme divisions within the country.

No matter how you personally feel about the war in Iraq, the fact is we made a gross error in attacking Iraq without just cause [there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq] and have to accept the consequences of our actions.  Trying to stop the Islamic State by taking military action against Syria would be the second greatest error this country could ever make due to the fact the militants aren’t just in Iraq and Syria, they are in numerous Arab countries.

A solution in Iraq that may have the potential of limiting the violence might be to split the country into three separate states, with the Kurds in control of one area, the Shi’a in another, and the Sunni’s in yet another with each group retaining a share of the oil.   EIA’s Country Analysis Brief of April 2, 2013 indicates five of the twelve major oil fields in Iraq,  are super-giant fields (reserves over five billion barrels) indicating there is more than enough oil to go around.

Bayphase Oil and Gas Consulting issued their 8th Edition of the Iraq Strategic Report in January of 2014 with the following statement:

“With potential to rival the reserves and production of Saudi Arabia, Iraq presents the greatest opportunity available today to the world’s oil and gas industry. Whether you are an oil company, service company or investor Iraq has the potential to deliver significant opportunity and influence your strategic decision making no matter where you operate.”

The Republic of Iraq will eventually turn into the wealthiest country in the world and will control a significant portion of the world’s oil supply.  Let us hope and pray the Iraqi’s are able to find peace with each other and with the rest of the world before that happens.

GOP Continues their Despicable, Deceitful, Devious, Disgusting Attacks

Opinion: Patricia L Johnson

The title of their article indicates a certain official advised her staff to delete e-mail, a claim made by House Republicans. The “Republicans” appear to be Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) both members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The ‘health official’ is the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. If you’ll recall correctly this was the person in charge of the Affordable Care Act website rollout and issued an apology to the people of the United States on October 29, 2013 for the website not living up to the ‘expectations of the American people’. The website was subsequently repaired, and millions of Americans who were previously uninsured now have medical coverage.

The e-mail in question is an e-mail written on October 5, 2013 by the Administrator and states “please delete this e-mail but see if we can work on call script.” It’s difficult to guess what the rest of the sentence says because it’s been redacted, I assume by CMS.

While we don’t know exactly why the Administrator requested the e-mail to be deleted I can make an educated guess. The reply quite simply covered a different subject and was not sent by a member of CMS.

The Administrator sent the original message to:

Julie B. (CMS/OC)

CC: Aryana C.

The response she received was from Jeanne L., who directed it to the Administrator, with copies to five other individuals and that may very well be where the problem lies as these individuals were not members of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, but from an entirely different group. A group whose correspondence is more than likely kept in a separate file and that may very well be what the redacted area states.

The fact the House Energy and Commerce Committee did not redact all names and pertinent information prior to publishing the e-mail in question is truly beyond belief. The fact the GOP continually tries to make mountains out of molehills, and twist and turn facts to make anyone and everyone in the Obama Administration appear guilty of wrongdoing is totally reprehensible.

Unfortunately, “news” coming from the media that has been supplied to them by GOP sources, all too often is turning into nothing more than idle blather, false accusations and gossip. We deserve better!

How to Help Them Help Us

By Patricia L Johnson

18,571 people will soon be mailed checks totaling more than $16 million dollars for their losses from American Tax Relief, LLC doing business as American Tax Relief. The checks will be mailed by the Federal Trade Commission. American Tax Relief claimed they could reduce your income tax debt and thousands of trusting folks were scammed by this organization that has since been banned from telemarketing and selling debt relief services, in addition to turning over millions of dollars in assets.

The majority of us are being inundated with land line calls, mobile calls, emails, text messages, fax messages and snail mail from every Tom, Dick, and Harry as well as Anne, Lynn and Mary that more than likely we are not interested in receiving. Each day that passes my mailbox is stuffed with numerous offers from various companies wanting to part me from my money (and they’re doing a bang-up job) as well as a hand full of calls from organizations with phone numbers longer than the Serial Number on my cell phone.

The Federal Trade Commission has an online ‘complaint assistant’ that can help you file a complaint with the FTC on any of the following issues:

  • Identity Theft
  • Credit and Debt
  • Unwanted Telemarketing, Text or SPAM
  • Mobile devices or telephones
  • Internet Services, Online Shopping or Computers
  • Jobs and Making Money
  • Other

Our complaints assist the FTC in determining patterns of fraud and abuse in certain areas. The complaints go into a “secure” online database and may be investigated by the various law enforcement agencies that work with the FTC.

Please note the following statement from the FTC website

“The FTC cannot resolve individual complaints, but we can provide information about what next steps to take.”

I don’t know about the rest of you, but that sounds like a step in the right direction to me. Example – I have an insurance policy with one specific company that is continually sending me mailings and calling, in an attempt to sell me additional policies. I have verbally instructed them not to send me the mailings, I have e-mailed the agent and told her not to send me additional correspondence, and I have written to their headquarters telling them to please not send me further marketing materials yet the mail keeps coming.

Don’t forget – if your phone number is listed on the National Do Not Call Registry, telemarketers covered by the National Do Not Call Registry have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling your number. Signing up for this service is free.

Some calls will still come through even if you are registered due to the fact the FTC and FCC, due to jurisdiction limitations, do not cover calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveys and companies that have an ongoing business relationship with you. My insurance company falls into that category, but if you contact the company and request they add your name to their own ‘do not call’ list, your request should be honored.

Most of the time it’s easier just to hang up the phone than go through all the bother of filing a complaint, but all that does is leave the door open for the marketer to waste someone else’s time. If we all act together there is a possibility we can stop these unwanted calls, texts, e-mails and snail mail solicitations.

Presidents and the U.S. Economy: An Econometric Exploration Alan S. Blinder and Mark W. Watson Woodrow Wilson School and Department of Economics Princeton University July 2014

www.princeton.edu/~mwatson/papers/Presidents_Blinder_Watson_July2014.pdf.

“We begin in Section 1 by documenting this fact, which is not at all “stylized.” The U.S. economy not only grows faster, according to real GDP and other measures, during Democratic versus Republican presidencies, it also produces more jobs, lowers the unemployment rate, generates higher corporate profits and investment, and turns in higher stock market returns.

Indeed, it outperforms under almost all standard macroeconomic metrics. By some measures, the partisan performance gap is startlingly large–so large, in fact, that it strains credulity, given how little influence over the economy most economists (or the Constitution, for that matter) assign to the President of the United States.”

TIDBITS – August 1, 2014

TIDBITS in the News – By Patricia L Johnson

• Circuit Court Judge, Terry Lewis [Leon County Florida] has ordered the state legislature to redraw congressional lines by August 15, 2014. The problem in the state is the 5th and 10th districts (Jacksonville and Orlando). This change may provide the Democrats with a new opening for picking up a House seat if it’s implemented prior to the midterm election.

• The $16.3 billion dollar Veterans Affairs bill is being sent to the President for his signature today. If the bill is signed into law it may mean a lot of changes in Veteran healthcare. A few are listed below:

1. Allow Veterans to access healthcare outside VA in certain instances.

2. Increase number of VA Health providers.

3. Provide VA with the authority to fire and or demote agency officials.

• We have yet another month of job creation that exceeded 200,000. Non-farm payroll employment for July 2014 rose 209,000.

• Question for the Day

• Why is there so much passion in this country about birth control and abortions, yet you hear virtually nothing when it comes to the fact the United States assists Israel with weapons? Right now there is a bill in Congress to approve an additional $225 million for Israel’s Iron Dome missile system. Some folks in this country go into hysterics because we are supplying certain groups of folks with birth control and/or providing abortions to those youngsters that may have made a mistake and have no way of caring for themselves, much less an unwanted child; yet we don’t shed a tear when we supply Israel with the means to attack living women and children in another country.

• Have we all forgotten that a fetus cannot live on its own, unless it’s so many months old, but a young child can if it’s not blown into smithereens by an enemy rocket?

Report on H.RES. 676 – BILL TITLE: Providing for authority to initiate litigation for actions by the President or other executive branch officials inconsistent with their duties under the Constitution of the United States

Kudos to Congressman Walter B. Jones, Jr. on His Litigation Vote

Congratulations to U.S. Congressman, Walter B. Jones, Jr., representing the 3rd congressional district in the State of North Carolina. Representative Jones is the ONLY Republican in the United States House of Representatives that had the guts to vote ‘Nay’ on H. Res. 676 “Providing for authority to initiate litigation for actions by the President or other executive branch officials inconsistent with their duties under the Constitution of the United States and H.R. 935, Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2013; and for other purposes”.

The final vote was 227-196 with 227 Republicans voting Yeah, 195 Democrats voting Nay, and one brave Republican, Congressman Jones, voting Nay. Nine members of congress did not vote as follows:

Clay
Cleaver
Davis, Rodney
DesJarlais
Hanabusa
Hurt
Nunnelee
Pompeo
Sires

Names in italics represent Democratic members while those that are not in italics are Republicans, Independent congressional member names are underlined, if any.

SHAME on Speaker of the House John Boehner, (R-OH) for allowing this ridiculous vote to take up valuable space on the calendar that could have been used for the U.S. House to actually pass something that would benefit the people of the United States of America.

You will note there is probably a difference between my count and the count that is being reported by news media. The reason is simple; there were actually two votes taken on H. Res. 676, one at 4:23 p.m. and one at 4:33 p.m. The data listed above is from the very last, and final, vote.

Following is an excerpt from the Jones press release issued after his vote:

“This lawsuit is merely an act of political theater that is highly unlikely to result in any real consequences for an executive branch that continues to display a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” said Congressman Jones.

Thank goodness at least one Republican member of the U.S. House understands that a lawsuit is simply a waste of taxpayer money.

It May Be Legal, But It Sure Isn’t Ethical In My Book

By Patricia L Johnson

There is a very nice young man that lives in my neighborhood and does various things for us that neither my husband nor I are able to do, mow the grass, pull weeds, shovel snow off the sidewalks, move items, carry cases of water and/or soda, and fill the water softener with salt; just anything and everything that requires any sort of lifting.

This young man has been taking care of these things for us for the past several years and we normally pay him cash. A couple months ago I decided I couldn’t really tell what I was spending money on when I continually use cash; therefore I needed to use my checkbook and/or ATM card for purchases/services rendered.

I began writing this young man checks for his services and through online banking noticed the checks weren’t being cashed so I thought maybe he was saving enough money to either open a checking account and/or pay his school tuition. A few more weeks went by and the checks still weren’t cashed so I asked his mother about it.

Apparently, the young man had taken the checks to the bank to open a checking account, but the bank would not open an account due to the fact he wasn’t 18 yet and you have to be 18 to sign a contract. Apparently he then attempted to open an account with a person over 18 as co-signer, but the individual had a parking ticket which apparently had to be paid before they could co-sign. Since when does the bank have access to driver’s records when opening an account?

When the young man’s mother explained the situation to me I sent an e-mail to our bank and the response I received completely and totally blew my mind.

They explained the legalities of being under age 18, etc., but then went on to explain that if you attempted to cash a check on that particular bank and did not have an account there was a fee involved. If the check was drawn on our bank and under $50 there was no fee, but if the check was drawn on our bank and the amount was over $50 there was a $10.00 non-customer fee to cash the checks.

How can they possibly charge a minimum of 20 percent to cash a check drawn on their own bank if it’s over $50.00? It’s not their money, it’s my money and once I wrote a check to this young man, it should have been HIS money. For sure 20 percent of it didn’t belong to the bank because they didn’t come over here in the sweltering heat to mow the grass, or move the deck furniture or do anything else.

The last time I ordered blank checks from my bank they charged me an exorbitant fee so I went out and purchased, what is probably a lifetime supply of blank checks, from my local wholesale club; therefore I’m hesitant to change banks, but I’m less than satisfied with this one.

Just out of curiosity I called our local currency exchange and asked them how much it would cost to cash a check, drawn on a local bank, for $100.00. Their response was $2.25. There’s a whole lot of difference between 20 percent and 2.2 percent.

Maybe I’m out of touch with reality because it has been a long time since I’ve worked outside the home, but it seems to me the easier the bank makes it for a person to do business, the more business they are going to obtain in the long run. Why would anyone want to open an account at this bank if they go in there to cash a check for $51 and have to pay $10 to cash it?

Making it more difficult for someone to succeed in life is absolutely not going to benefit anyone in the long run.

The Stupidity of It!

Opinion by Patricia L Johnson

A day or two ago I wandered over to my local post office to mail a package and almost could not believe my eyes. Sitting in the grassy area was a small structure that resembled a pulpit with two or three men standing around with signs saying “IMPEACH OBAMA”. I assume the pulpit was assembled for the primary purpose of having the local idjits* sign a petition demanding impeachment.

It would be virtually impossible for this President to be impeached and anyone that doesn’t understand that fact, for whatever reason, may want to think twice about voting in any election.

Any sort of impeachment proceeding against President Obama now is nothing more than another exercise in futility, a waste of time and yet another incredible waste of taxpayer funds.

The Constitution of the United States sets forth the rules for impeachment which can be found in the following articles:

Article I, Sec. 2, Cl. 5; Article 1, Sec. 3, Cl. 6 & 7; Article II, Sec. 2, Cl. 1; and Article 2, Sec. 4.

In a nutshell, the 435-member House of Representatives has the sole power to write up Articles of Impeachment pertaining to the President of the United States. Our U.S. House is controlled by our “do-nothing” Republicans, but believe me if it came to writing Articles of Impeachment, they would find a way to “get ‘er done”.

The next hurdle however is the trial. The Senate has the sole power to try impeachments; however the President cannot be convicted without two-thirds of the Members present voting for conviction. The majority of the 100 members in the U.S. Senate are Democrats, which means not only would all Republicans have to vote for conviction of the charges, a large percentage of Democrats would also have to vote for conviction. A monumental task at best considering the fact this POTUS has done nothing other than attempt to do his job with little or no help from the obstructionist party.

When all is said and done the President would have to be convicted of more than one of the articles in order to be tossed out of office and that simply is impossible, based on current regulations.

Former Governor Sarah Palin is the first individual that called for impeachment of President Obama in an Op-Ed she wrote exclusively for breitbart.com an excerpt follows:

“It’s time to impeach; and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment.

The many impeachable offenses of Barack Obama can no longer be ignored. If after all this he’s not impeachable, then no one is.”

Over the years Governor Palin has made more than one major blunder when talking politics, but her comment in the exclusive article saying “it’s time to impeach” President Obama has to be, without a doubt, at the top of the list when it comes to ‘less than smart’. Apparently Palin has little or no concept of the procedures involved in impeaching the POTUS; if she did she would know it would be virtually impossible to impeach this President.

My question for the day is this: If the Former Governor of Alaska, who ran for the position of Vice President of the United States of America in the 2008 election appears not to be able to comprehend the requirements for impeaching a POTUS, what hope is there for the level of intelligence of the rest of the members of the Tea Party?

Seems to me that when you run for any office in the United States Government you should know something about how the Government is supposed to be run. News reports are indicating two more Tea Party candidates, are also calling for impeachment. Is the Party of do-nothing also the Party of know-nothing?

*idjit is not spelled incorrectly. I am using this new word to describe those politicians that fall into the possibly ‘less than intelligent’ category on the scale of government knowledge 🙂

“Because the New York Times Doesn’t”

Opinion by Patricia L Johnson

If you’ve ever raised any teenagers you’ve heard the expression because so and so does it, more than once when you’ve provided a negative response to a question of the teen doing something or another that you did not want them doing. For some reason kids think the old standby, “because Mary does it, or Suzy does it, or Larry, or Tom or Harry does it”, it should be okay for them.

There’s very little logic behind their thinking, but that’s the way teens of today and yesterday think. Unfortunately that same ignorance has now been passed on to adults. In teens the attitude is somewhat amusing (if not completely and totally frustrating), in adults that attitude borders on disgusting.

A prime example is the recent comment made by 86-year old editor/publisher George Capsis. Mr. Capsis is the publisher of the West View News, a New York West Village local paper. According to the New York Post, when Publisher Capsis was asked about the shocking headline of the recent article written by James Lincoln Collier, “The Ni**er in the White House” (without the asterisks); he was quoted as saying “The editorial staff continues to object to the use of the word… in this article, however, Jim (the author) reminded me that the New York Times avoids using the word which convinced me that Westview should”.

Obviously Capsis, now well past the age of retirement is also past the age of being able to use common sense as well as common courtesy and should retire immediately. It is disrespectful to call anyone, white, black, Hispanic or Asian the “N” word, and certainly more so when the racial slur is being used to describe the President of the United States.

The article itself has been removed from the West View News website. The fact the intent of the article was to bring attention to the fact ‘far-right voters hate Obama because he is black’ and how acceptance of this ‘far-right opinion has made racism more acceptable’ to the country in general, has been lost in the shuffle due to the fact the article was allowed to be released with such a repulsive title.

The July 6th article written by the New York Post regarding this subject may be found at the following URL http://nypost.com/2014/07/06/obama-called-the-n-word-in-west-village-newspapers-headline/

Let’s fantasize for a minute and say that each of us is not African American, yet after we go to sleep tonight and wake up in the morning, we look in the mirror and find that during the night we have become African American. Our skin is now as black as the ace of spades and try as we might, we scrub and scrub and we’re not going to be able to wash away our new color.

How do you think about yourself? Are you the same person you were the night before? Are others going to look at you the same way they did the day before?

If your answer is ‘no’, is it your fault? Should you be blamed in any way whatsoever, or discriminated against by anyone, just because your skin is a different color?

Americans need to grow up!

Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Michael G. Grimm, the Republican Representative for the 11th (formerly 13th) Congressional District in New York surrendered to federal authorities Monday, April 28, 2014. The grand jury indictment indicating the charges against Representative Grimm was unsealed on Monday, April 28, 2014 and consists of the following 20 counts:

1. Obstructing and Impeding the Due Administration of the Internal Revenue Laws

2. Conspiracy to Defraud the United States

3. Aiding and assisting in the Preparation of False and Fraudulent Tax Returns

4. Aiding and assisting in the Preparation of False and Fraudulent Tax Returns

18. Perjury

19. Obstruction of Official Proceeding

20. Unlawful Employment of Aliens

It is a fact that in the United States a person is considered innocent until proven guilty and there’s nothing wrong with operating under that premise due to the fact many innocent men and women have been convicted of crimes and later found to be innocent of any wrong doing. That certainly may turn out to be the case in this instance.

The difference however, is Representative Grimm, is a member of the United States House of Representatives, serving on the Financial Services committee. Representative Grimm has absolutely no intentions of resigning his seat in Congress, claiming to be a ‘moral man, and a man of integrity’. The charges against this Member of Congress are extremely serious and if he won’t resign on his own, his constituents should demand his resignation based on the gravity of the charges he is facing.

So, Where ARE the Jobs?

By Patricia L Johnson and Richard E Walrath

The question that keeps repeating itself over and over again by the Republicans is “Where ARE the Jobs?” Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH) asked the question again on January 10, 2014:

Posted by Speaker Boehner’s Press Office January 10, 2014 Press Release WASHINGTON DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement today regarding the Department of Labor’s unemployment report for December 2013: “Every American has a right to ask the question “Where are the jobs?”.

After doing everything possible to make sure a jobs bill was not passed, Boehner wants to know Where are the jobs?

It’s more than obvious Republicans do not know the first thing about Job Creation. They can spout their talking points until they are blue in the face, but the fact remains the numbers tell an entirely different story. Republicans simply do not know how to create jobs. To prove the point let us look at the number of jobs created under each President over the past 25 years as follows:

During the four year period of time that President George H.W. Bush was in office there were a total of 2,588,000 jobs created.

President William J. Clinton’s eight-years in office created 23,230,000 jobs, the most that have ever been created during an eight-year period of time and more than were created by 10 other presidents combined.

President George W. Bush’s eight-years in office brought about the “great” recession and total job creation of 2,050,000 jobs. President Bush’s policies were so geared towards job creation that in his final year in office we lost 3.6 billion jobs in 2008, followed by a loss of 5.1 million jobs in 2009, or a total loss of 8.6 billion jobs in a two year period.

President Barack Obama’s policies can only be described as bordering on miraculous because in a 62 month period of time he has created 2,925,000 jobs – approximately 875,000 more jobs than were created than in the full 96 months of George W. Bush’s Presidency, with little or no assistance from Republican members of Congress.

If you throw in the fact the U.S. experienced one of the worst recessions in the history of our country which began in December of 2007 and did not end until June 2009, President Obama’s policies have been exceptionally successful. The answer to the question “Where are the jobs?” is quite simple really, they are in the hands of the Democrats and if you want to see more jobs created in this country you would do well to remember that fact when you go to the polls this fall.
